The Lady Patriots’ softball team scrimmaged at East Central last week with good results.

“Our pitchers threw well, our hitting was a little bit behind where I thought it would be,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “It went well, I’m pretty pleased overall.”

Lady Patriot pitchers stand five-deep this season, including Chloe Greene, Bailey Mathews, Kyleigh Payne, Tori Russell and Roya Walton.

UC hitters faced good EC pitchers but still came away optimistic about the season.

“We have 6 or 7 who can hit the ball pretty consistently,” Gray commented. “Tori Russell for one. She had two nice hits and Roya Walton had a good night at East Central.”

Other hitters to watch include Greene, Sophia Knock, Annalea Adams, Mathews and Shelby Hill.

“I’m very anxious to get started,” Gray said. “And the girls are ready to go, they are tired of practicing.”

Union County plays a doubleheader at Cowan on Saturday, April 3, and continues on the road at North Decatur on Tuesday, April 6. Opening day at home is Thursday, April 8, with TEC opponent Hagerstown.

“I think we will be super competitive, if not the team to beat in the conference; if pitching holds out and we stay injury-free, we can make a nice conference run and nice state tournament run,” Gray said. “We’re ready to go and see what happens!”

(UC destroyed New Castle Tuesday in the season opener, 23-0. Greene pitched a complete game while Knock and Adams each hit two of the Pats’ 7 home runs. Read more in next week’s edition.)
