Batesville’s varsity girls basketball program fell twice to Union County last Friday night at Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium. The Lady Patriots defeated the Lady Bulldogs, 33-25, in the junior varsity game and then UC followed up with a 43-31 victory set-back in the varsity game.
Batesville’s varsity fell behind early and Union County refused to allow them back in the game.
“We played a better opponent tonight than we did last week – an opponent that was tall and long,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “I thought we did a fantastic job.”
Batesville’s 10 member varsity roster lists six seniors (5-6, 5-8, 5-8, 5-8, 5-8, 5-9) two juniors (5-2, 5-7) and two freshmen (5-10, 5-9). Union County’s average height is 5-5.
Union County senior Lauren Alldredge and UC’s scrappy defense led UC to a 9-0 first quarter lead. Alldredge nailed three consecutive 3-pointers in the first quarter on her way to a game-high 17 points, including five treys.
“When you have that kind of scoring out of your senior, in that kind of game, you couldn’t ask for more,” Gray said. “Faith Richardson played well and Brooke Fields played tonight sick as a dog but she gave everything she had on the court.”
The Lady Patriots took a 13-0 lead when Fields hit an open two pointer. Batesville was finally able to get on the scoreboard in the second period with a basket from Alyson Peters. That started a 6-0 run for the Lady Bulldogs. Calley Kaiser and Sophia Gesell both hit open baskets to pull back within seven. Kaiser added another two points before UC went on their own 6-0 run. Emma Weiler and Peters scored just before the half where they went into the locker room down 23-12.
Batesville came back after halftime to outscore UC, 8-5, getting within eight points of UC after the third period. The Lady Bulldogs’ defense stepped up, slowed Union County’s offense down, and stayed close in the final eight minutes. Peters started the BHS scoring with a basket and two free thows, Carley Pride added another field goal for BHS but the Lady Bulldogs couldn’t get by UC’s scrappy defense. UC finished with an 8-0 run before Peters and Pride each added another basket, Pride’s a three pointer. Final score: 43-31.
“We have young kids with little varsity experience who are asked to come in and do some things and right now they are handling it well,” Gray said. “But we had 20 turnovers and probably should not have won that game. I just think we will get better and better as go.”
Batesville committed 18 fouls and UC made good on 10-of-12 at the free throw line. The Lady Bulldogs converted 4-of-11 freebies.
Freshman Alyson Peters (5-9) led Batesville scoring with eight points.

Union County’s junior varsity led 7-5 at the end of the first quarter and never fell behind. Freshman Katie McCashland paced Union County with 16 points.
