Stirn had beaten Oldenburg Academy’s Will Hollingsworth 6-0, 6-0 as FC won a 5-0 semifinal over the Twisters. Nick Wendel and Garrett Kuntz also dispatched their OA opponents; Oldenburg forfeited doubles play.
In the finals, Rushville was waiting after defeating Connersville Thursday. Stirn and Marlin Hershberger had battled through 3 sets in the regular season, but this time Stirn won 6-1, 6-4. The No. 2 doubles team of Avery Crouch and Ty Bruns fought to get into a third set but fell 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). Avery Harrison and Trevor Bruns were dropped 6-2, 6-2. Sam Smith defeated Wendel 6-0, 6-0. The Lions’ Cam Jackman took care of Kuntz, 6-1, 6-0.
Stirn’s matchups last week at Richmond High School included the Red Devils’ Jaden Hollingsworth and New Castle’s Trent Alfrey. The Wildcat ace dropped Alfrey 6-2, 6-3 on Oct. 5 to return the next evening. Playing Hollingsworth for the second time this year, the result was similar as Stirn won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to move to 22-0 on the year.
Stirn next heads to Fishers High School Saturday morning to face Triton Central senior Alex Crouse, who is also 4-0 in the state tourney. A win would put him in the individual regional final later in the day against the winner of Rossville’s Evan Lawson and Southmont’s Adam Cox, both juniors.
Rushville won the regional but lost to Covington 3-2 in semistate action.
