Union County’s Marissa Young, Johannah Nelson and Haley Alcorn ran well in strong, windy conditions at last Saturday’s IHSAA Cross Country regional at Rushville.

“The ladies ran exceptional this morning at Rushville,” UC coach Phil Cox said. “They all ran more than a minute faster than at sectional.”

Young was seconds away from a personal record with a time of 23:50. Nelson finished one less than one second ahead of her teammate Alcorn with a time of 25:23.

“I couldn’t be more proud of three girls in my coaching career, they practice hard and race harder. It was a great finish to the season,” Cox said. “We knew going in that this would be their last race of the season, but we kept things positive and did our own thing. Sometimes you just have to make the best of things and enjoy the race. That’s why today was a victory!”

Abigail Adams of Franklin Central was the girls race winner (19:56) and the first of four teammates who placed first, second, third and fourth and led the Lady Flashes to the regional team title.

Centerville’s Lady Bulldogs were the sixth-place team, Richmond eighth and Hagerstown eleventh.

2021 Girls Rushville Regional Cross Country team scores: Franklin Central 17, Mt. Vernon 85, Roncalli 89, New Palestine 129, Warren Central 135, Centerville 138, New Castle 186, Richmond 192, Rushville 233, Greenfield Central 243, Hagerstown 301.

UC girls times: Marissa Young 23:53.0, Johanna Nelson 25:23.8, Haley Alcorn 25:24.2. 86 total runners.
