Boys of Fall-Patriots shut out Eagles

At Lincoln last week, the Patriots won the coin toss at the beginning of the game, elected to receive, scored on first possession and each remaining possessions and squeezed in a safety before rain and lightning cancelled the game during halftime. The 49-0 halftime score is also the final game score.
Lincoln’s roster contains 17 names (seven freshmen) to Union County’s 24; including four freshmen. It was a bit of an uneven match-up before the weatherman stepped in, but a win is a win.
“Really happy with how we played extremely fast,” UC coach Joel Hofmann said. “We were able to get those five guys back and it helped so much and gave some other guys rest here and there.”
The Patriots didn’t hesitate - three plays later, quarterback Ragen Bias stood in the end zone - Touchdown #1.
One minute, 30 seconds later, the Patriots were on the move again. Two first downs and, three penalties later, Reece Watterson hauled in a 29-yd. pass reception on fourth down that put him in the end zone. Touchdown #2.
“The offense was just about as efficient as you could be and the ball was spread around which makes it really tough on the opposing defense,” Hofmann said. “Defensively our guys really flew around and caused havoc. Junior Evan Wolf was electric on defense in his first game of the year.”
With under four minutes left in the first quarter, Bias connected with Blake Richards for a 25-yard touchdown . Touchdown #3.
After Lincoln’s 4-and-out ,UC ran one play before Bias went 76 yards into the end zone with 59 seconds left in the first quarter. Touchdown #4.
“Special teams were highlighted by senior Tristan Jones who had numerous tackles on kickoff coverage that pinned Lincoln deep,” Hofmann said.
The Patriots were just as productive in the second quarter, beginning with a pass interception at Lincoln’s 10 yard line by sophomore Topper Fritts. That play set up Watterson finding the end zone. Kicer Gabe Cox set up for the PAT kick with Bias holding. Snap! Bias never put the ball down but stood tall to complete the pass to Richards. Bingo, Touchdown #5 in less than a minute.
Lincoln’s next possession began on the 10-yard-line and ended in their own end zone thanks to Watterson’s quarterback sack. The safety put UC up, 36-0, with more than eight minutes remaining. That score changed in the next minute when Richards scored from 25 yards out. Touchdown #6.
Bias and Richardson hooked up one more time on a 12-yard touchdown pass as lightning set in as halftime began. Touchdown #6.
“Lightning was a factor that sat on us for awhile and their roster left them in a position to move on so they could play next week.” Hofmann said. “We came out of the game clean (injury free). “We're right at 20 (players) and still trying to get a couple guys back.”
