Patriots Soccer-Patriots split doubleheader
September 1, 2021 at 9:03 p.m.
The Union County and Franklin County boys soccer clubs played a high-scoring affair Tuesday evening in steady rainfall on the FCHS pitch. When the final horn sounded, it was the visiting Patriots collecting their first victory of the season by a 6-5 count.
UC staved off a Wildcat comeback attempt that saw the hosts regroup from a 4-2 halftime deficit. FC tied the game at five apiece on an attack that had the Patriots looking for an offside call. They were fortunate to get the referee signal shortly after, an offside penalty negating the Cats' go-ahead goal.
With just two minutes left on the game clock, junior Ty Elleman - who had an earlier goal in his ledger - got loose for what turned out to be the game-winner.
“The boys played hard and aggressively tonight,” said UC head coach Dave Reeder. “It's very nice to put a win in the books for a change. I'm very proud of the team.”
Following the tiebreaker, Reeder dropped all 10 players to the backfield for a prevent defense; any advanced ball was sent back across midfield as time ticked off.
Junior Peyton Torres got UC's scoring underway with a pair of goals in the first period. Sophomore Logan Harris scored the Pats' next goal and classmate Caden Coffman added another before intermission.
Torres nearly had a hat trick in the second half when a kick was deflected by the Wildcat goalkeeper; Elleman gathered up the carom and sent it into the net.
For Franklin County, two strikers enjoyed two-goal nights – sophomore Aydyn Patterson and senior Juan Simancas.
Wapahani visits UC Saturday, noon.
FINAL SCORE - FC 4, UC 0
The first game of the evening's doubleheader saw the Lady Wildcats shut out the Lady Patriots 4-0. The home team scored two goals in each half.
Morgan Stewart and Kamryn Dozier did the honors for Franklin County in the opening 40 minutes as the Cats fired off about seven shots. The UC defense limited the second-half offensive attacks, but Dozier was able to get another goal and teammate Maegan Pearson put in a fourth.
The Patriots ended with two shots on goal, both rejected by freshman keeper Liz Wendel. Pearson added another save in goal for FC.
UC plays Wapahani Saturday.
