After surrendering 27 points in the stanza to East Central on Sept. 10, the Cats allowed host Lawrenceburg 34 big markers in Friday night’s second frame. A 41-0 halftime deficit held up as the final as a running clock ensued in the second half.
The Tigers, a top 10 team in Class 3A, led just 7-0 following the first 12 minutes. On the new stanza’s first play from scrimmage, All-State candidate Garrett Yoon nearly threw a pick-six. Seconds later, he was crossing the goal line after a 64-yard jaunt up the middle to make it a two-score game.
Things spiraled downhill quickly for the visiting squad. Already missing their most dynamic offensive weapon in Jacob Schatzle, starting running back Bridger Bolos lay on the turf following a minimal gain on 1st-and-10. His replacement, Andrew Merritt, lost a fumble on the next play and Yoon struck a fade pattern to fellow senior Dahya Patel – along with interior lineman Ashton Craig and Yoon, one of three Division I talents on the LHS roster – for an 18-yard touchdown. In less than a minute, the hosts had gone up three scores at 21-0.
FC got a solid return from senior Kristian Prows on the kickoff and a Brady Morehead to Hunter Geis pass gave the Cats first down at the Tiger 22-yard-line. However, Morehead coughed up the pigskin on the next play.
Lawrenceburg, wasting little time, earned a first down on a quick pass to Brennan Bushman; after a 5-yard gain for Yoon, the efficient quarterback hit on a crossing route to Patel, who bounced off a defender for a 54-yard scoring play. LHS missed its only extra point attempt for a 27-0 lead.
The Wildcat defense got some help from the Tiger offense – two holding calls and one procedure – to force a punt by Yoon on the next possession. Prows mishandled the kick and Lawrenceburg was right back in business at the FC 21. After a Wildcat timeout, Teagan Bennett carried twice to put his team up by 34.
Morehead connected with Prows and Tyreke Carr for a first down on the next drive, but one play later the Tiger defense jarred the ball loose from Prows after a 5-yard pass play. Jake Pierce returned the fumble all the way to FC’s 6; after a Tiger false start, Yoon went in untouched from the 11-yard stripe. Mary Brewington made her second point-after-touchdown for the game’s final tally.
The guests gained a couple first downs in the abbreviated last half but also suffered a sack-fumble with time running low in the fourth.
FC had a fumble recovery of its own on the game’s first drive as Patel bobbled the rock inside the Wildcat 5. A three-and-out by the visitors put LHS (4-1) in prime field position at the Cats’ 14. Brushing aside a pair of penalties, the Tigers scored on an 18-yard strike from Yoon to Luke Pierce.
Seniors Kaden Erfman and Austin Hill led FC’s defense with 8 tackles each and junior Peyton McCreary added 6 and a fumble recovery. Junior Bryce Hodapp had one sack of Yoon.
FC (3-2) hosts Greensburg, Friday, 7 p.m. for homecoming night in Brookville.
