The Winchester Golden Falcons spoiled Union County’s homecoming with a 32-19 win over the Patriots last week.

“We moved the ball and had opportunities,” UC coach Joel Hofmann said. “But didn’t finish the job.”

The Patriots scored touchdowns in 3-of-4 quarters but fell short on extra point attempts.

The Patriots scored on their opening possession and so did the Falcons.
Beginning on their own 35-yard line, the Patriots scored seven plays later with quarterback Ragen Bias going in from 24-yards out. The PAT failed, but UC led, 7-.0

The Falcons struck right back with senior Braxton Bosworth with a 16-yard TD. Freshman Lucas Reed added the PAT kick to give Winchester a 8-7 edge on the scoreboard.

UC opened the second quarter with Bias going in from the one for his second TD in the game. The failed PAT gave UC a 13-8 edge.

Winchester responded with one of the longest drives in the game. Quarterback Brayden Tippett ran 14 plays before running in from the one to score. A 2-point PAT put Winchester up, 16-13, at halftime.

”And now, the 2021 Homecoming King is Reece Watterson.”

“The 2021 Homecoming Queen is Sophia Knock.”

Watterson is the son of Melanie and Scott Watterson with plans to attend college and then medical school to study to become a pharmacist.

Knock is the daughter of Joe and Melissa Knock who will attend Longwood University in Virginia to continue her academic and athletic career. She will play softball and study biology.

Barnhizer also announced the winners of the float competition between classes are...Juniors first place, Sophomores second place, Seniors third and Freshmen fourth.

Overall winners of class competition are...Juniors first place, Seniors second place, Sophomores third and Freshmen fourth.

Back on the field

Winchester’s first possession after halftime ended at midfield when the Falcons were stopped on fourth down at the Patriots’ 36 yard line. Six plays later, Bias teamed up with Wolf for a 16-yard touchdown and a 19-16 UC lead.

The following kickoff went to Falcon junior Logan Vasquez, who sprinted down the sideline for a 60-yard kick-off return touchdown. Winchester 24, UC 19. Winchester came back with a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to win, 32-19.

“Had opportunities down close and one in the end zone,” Hofmann said. “Guys not doing their job. Everybody thought everybody else was going to do it. We’ve just got to finish.”
