The Lady Patriots defeated Northeastern on the road last week in three sets, 25-19, 25-15 and 25-7. Union County is adjusting to several players who are sidelined for various reasons (injuries, illness, quarantines).

After losing to Lawrenceburg in three sets, the Lady Pats’ teamwork and energy never faltered at Northeastern.

“I’m real happy with this,” UC coach Allison Kassens said. “They are scrappy girls and that’s what you need with a short team.”

NE opened the first set with a 2-1 lead before UC tied it 12-12 behind Whitney King’s four service points and Chloe Greene’s three. That was only the beginning. The Lady Knights kept pace tying the score every other server until Kasey Lang’s final touch gave UC possession with Lang at the service line. The UC senior served an ace to win the match, 28-26.

The Lady Patriots never trailed in the 25-13 second set.

In the third set, Union County’s first server, Carly McCashland, put UC up, 8-1, with back-to-back aces in a string of eight points. Lang jumped on board with an ace a little later (21-12) and NE’s Lilly Null served five points to close the gap to 21-16. By this time McCashland rotated back to the service line, served four points including an ace to finish the set, 25-17, and win the match.

“I believe in them and I think they believe in me,” Kassens said. “It was a good win.”

Hitter Hannah Vaughn and server Shelby Hill traveled with the team to NE to offer their support. Both were on crutches.

“One (Hill) had knee surgery yesterday that began at the Centerville game,” Kassens said. “The other one (Vaughn) was injured during a homecoming activity and had an MRI today.”

At Cowan over the weekend, the short Lady Patriots continued to dominate, beating Shenandoah 3-0 andCowan 3-1.

“I am extremely proud of them and their willingness to fight for a win,” coach Kassens said.

Union County stands 4-0 in the Tri-Eastern Conference and 9-2 overall.
“It will probably be two weeks before we get height back,” Kassens ended.
