The Franklin County Wildcats' baseball team began its season this Saturday with a doubleheader at Richmond.

In the first matchup, Brant Ertel pitched four solid innings of scoreless baseball while the Cats' offense put up five runs in the second inning and three more in the top of the fifth frame to take an 8-0 lead. The Red Devils added three runs in the bottom of the fifth. FC added two more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to cruise to an 11-3 victory to begin the season.

The second contest of Saturday's doubleheader saw the Red Devils get on the board first. The Cats put up a run in the second and another in the third but that is all they would score in the game. Richmond scored in the fourth and again in the sixth frame to take a 4-2 win and split the series.

In the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference opener Monday against East Central, the visiting Trojans enjoyed innings of two runs, four runs and six runs through the heart of the contest to run away with the matchup, 13-4.

Junior Sam Bond feasted on Wildcat pitching – starter Adam Daugherty and relievers Trevor Moizuk and Hunter Geis – to a line of three hits (all of them home runs), three runs scored and nine runs batted in. Josh Ringer had two hits and three stolen bases for EC, with Brayden Rouse and Eli Aston each adding a pair of hits. Sam Huston was the winning pitcher for the Trojans.

FC completes the home-and-home with the St. Leon squad Thursday, traveling up the highway for a 5:30 first pitch.
