Union County defeated the New Castle Lady Trojans, 4-2, last week in the opening game of the season.

“Better than scrimmage, but we’re going to struggle for a while. Trying to figure out a few things offensively,” UC coach Scott Gray said.

Junior pitcher Chloe Greene and company scored in the first inning on back-to-back doubles. Annalea Adams hit to the center field fence and Sophia Knock followed up with a double to score Adams.

“Some girls not proven hitters yet but Annalea and Sophia  stepped up tonight and Chloe Greene hit the ball hard. We’ve got some holes to fill and figure out who our better hitters are and that’s how its going to be for a while.”

Adams was 2-for-3 including a double and Knock was 2-for-3 with a double and triple.

Greene fanned six NC batters before UC lit up the scoreboard again in the fifth inning.

Harly Pilgrim reached first on a walk, Adams singled to centerfield and Knock’s right-field triple scored both runners.

“Defensively, I was thrilled. They talked and played really well.”

UC held the Trojans scoreless until the sixth inning when they hit three consecutive singles to load the bases. A run scored when the next batter was hit by a pitch. Then a strike out ended the threat.

The Lady Trojans opened the seventh inning with back-to-back hits (triple and single) but fell short of UC, 4-2.
