Strong start leads to 13-5 victory over SW Spartans

Union County liked the number 5 in last week’s win over the Shelby County Southwestern (SW) Spartans. The Patriots scored five runs in the second inning, five runs in the fifth and held SW to five runs over all.
Six SW players went to the plate and scored two runs on a walk, two ground outs and two errors. The Patriots closed out the first inning without a Patriot reaching first base. SW-2, UC-0.
Kyle Sams’ double followed by a Mason Stewart single put a pair of Pats on base to get the 5-run, second inning going. Seth Richardson’s groundout scored Sams. Blake Richards reached first on a dropped third strike and John Ridenour singled to score Stewart and Richards. UC-5, SW-2.
SW picked up a run in the top of the third and UC topped that with Richardson and Grady Swafford circling the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning. UC-7, SW-3.
The Spartans came back with two runs in the fifth inning only to watch Richardson, Swafford, Richards and Eric Burdine drive in runs in the second five run inning of the day. UC-12, SW-5.
The winning pitcher for UC, Stewart gave up three runs on two hits in four innings while fanning three batters and issued one walk. Sams, Burdine and Shepherd came on to finish on the mound. SW came up scoreless in the final two innings. UC added a run in the sixth to win, 13-5.

The 3-1 Patriots travel to Northeastern today, Thursday, April 14, and host a double-header with Franklin County Saturday, April 16 at 11 a.m.
