Lady Wildcats win big on senior night

With a 51-34 senior night victory over South Dearborn on Jan. 25, the Franklin County Lady Wildcats and first-year coach Kyle Van Meter secured the program's most wins in the past five years. At 11-12, FC headed to the Greensburg sectional Tuesday night to face Rushville. Results of the game were not available at press time.

Five seniors – players Alex Gillman, Jenna Bruns, Saige Mergenthal, Kylie Lea and manager Anne Becker – had the spotlight prior to tipoff as each saw video words of encouragement from parents.

The quartet then helped FC get out to a quick 5-0 lead as Mergenthal had a rebound basket and Gillman completed a traditional 3-point play. The Lady Knights settled in and tied things up on a Bernadette Wismann score.

The FC answer came in the form of Bruns passing to junior Kassidy Schell for a triple. The 3-point lead soon became seven when junior Macy Crain connected from the elbow (Nicole Mears assist) and Bruns found Josie Rolfes on the side for three more. A 3-point play by Natalie Rupp set the score at 13-9 after one.

The hosts started period two on a 6-0 run as Rolfes hit again from three and later made 2 of 2 at the charity stripe. At 19-12, Schell enjoyed a nice stretch ahead of the halftime break as she scored in transition and added 3 of 4 from the foul line. FC led 24-17 going into the locker room.

Two minutes into the new half, Rolfes made her third trey off a Schell assist. Freshman Tiffany Billman pushed the lead into double digits with a 3-pointer and Bruns put in a layup to make it 33-19. A Gillman goal later sent FC up 35-21.
Schell dished to Mears at the 2:42 mark to maintain the 14-point spread. Gillman then finished another 3-point play as part of an 11-0 surge by the home team that effectively finished off the Knights. Mears and Rolfes put in buckets as the third quarter ended.

Bruns' two foul shots made it 46-23 early in the fourth. Mergenthal (4 points) and Bruns (1) fittingly scored the last points of the regular season finale.
Rolfes led all players with 13, with Schell and Gillman adding 8 apiece. Rupp and Wismann paced SD with 8 each.

FC finished 3-4 in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference, good for fifth place as East Central went a perfect 7-0 in the league.
