“Last year we had three going to semi-state,” UC coach AJ Bryson said. “This year we’ve got four kids going and third overall as a team!”
Champions Carson Whitley (113 lbs.), and Jesus Aquino-Morales (120 lbs.), and 3rd placers Evan Wolf (145 lbs.) and Jordan Takara (152 lbs.) round out Union County’s semi-state foursome.
•Whitley advanced through the 113 lb. bracket with a first round forfeit, a quick pin (:48) of Franklin County’s Cole Freese to reach the championship match where Whitley won a 10-7 decision over Greensburg junior Bryant Merritt.
•Morales began with a first round pin of Northeastern’s Wesley Beckman and followed up with a 3:36 pin of Rushville junior Tuff Tackett to advance to the 120 lb. championship match against Alex Murphy. Morales out-pointed the Batesville senior, 7-1, to win.
“Chewy and Carson repeat champs, Wolf and Takara take third and third overall as a team,” Bryson said.
Wolf began with a pin (1:49) over Northeastern’s Thane Berger before losing a 9-2 decision to Centerville senior Devin Frazier, advancing to wrestle for third place. The UC junior earned a pin win (2:54) over New Castle’s Joey Hannon to place third in the bracket.
Takara worked quickly to pin (:44) Hagerstown’s Owen Mitchell before falling to New Castle’s Jon Eberhart by a 3-2 decision. That sent Takara up against senior Luke Thomas of Knightstown in the third-place match. Takara pinned Thomas in 4:14 to finish third in the 152 lb. bracket.
UC’s Cal Rudnick (106 lbs.) and Tanner Burns (132 lbs.) lost in the opening round.
Rudnick was pinned by the eventual 106 lb. champion, Heather Crull of Northeastern. Burns was pinned by New Castle junior Brevan Thrine.
Bryson said regional turned out about how he thought it would with one exception...heavyweight Nate Reffitt advanced to regional but did not compete due to a back injury.
The New Castle Semi-state is Saturday, Feb. 12 at Chrysler Field House.
“Gotta win two matches at semi-state and the second round match will be against tough opponents. At this stage of the game, it all gets tougher. We’ll see.”
