Lady Cats are stopped

Rushville's Belle Gossett put the first points on the board. Kassidy Schell, the FC junior, quickly tied the game up on the next possession. The Lady Lions scored two more times, with Lexi Morris and Briley Munchel both adding baskets in the opening quarter. The Lady Cats went cold, shooting 0-of-9 the remainder of the period, and Rushville led after the first quarter by the score of 6-2.
Rushville continued to shut down the Lady Wildcats' offense into the second frame while Morris added three more points and Leonie Boyer knocked down a basket to give RCHS an 11-2 lead. Midway through the second period, FC point guard Jenna Bruns was able to sink a free throw to stop the Rushville run. Munchel then got the hot hand for the Lady Lions and added two baskets from beyond the arc to push the lead to 13 points in Rushville's favor. Schell added another basket for FC and senior Alex Gillman dropped in two layups in the paint on back-to-back possessions, bringing the score to 17-8. Boyer and Morris finished the second half by scoring two more points apiece to take the Lady Lions into the locker room up by a score of 21-8.
The second half began with Boyer draining a three for RCHS and Bruns matching that with her own make from downtown for the Lady Wildcats. Munchel added two more points on a leaner in the lane. Rushville played aggressively on offense, and it paid off with Boyer and Sophia Dora both drawing fouls and draining their free throw opportunities. Munchel sank a shot from just inside the arc and Rushville extended its lead to 30-13. Nicole Mears got into the action by adding four points to FC's total in the third period and Schell added four more points, two via a layup and two from the charity stripe. The Lady Lions finished the third frame by getting another deep shot to drop from Munchel, giving her seven points in the period; Dora hit a three-pointer to push the Rushville lead to 38-19.
The fourth quarter saw plenty of scoring action as the Lady Wildcats put up 15 points. Bruns was responsible for six of those, hitting 2-of-4 from the field and collecting a pair of free throws. Gossett got back into the action for RCHS, adding three points in the period after sitting out a portion of the third frame in foul trouble. Franklin County's scoreboard finally saw some movement, with Schell adding five more points to her total. FC took 10 shots from the field, knocking down four; the Wildcats also collected six points on free throws, giving them 26 points in the half. The Lady Lions finished the game on the free throw line where they collected freebies from Boyer, Gossett and Annika Marlow to secure the 13-point win for Rushville.
Schell had 12 points and Bruns 10 to lead FC. Munchel paced the Lions with 15.
FC finished 11-13, sending Bruns, Gillman, Saige Mergenthal and Kylie Lea on to graduation. Rushville and Greensburg made the finals.
