“When we can play like we did tonight, we’re super excited,” UC coach Scott Gray said following the Lady Patriots’ 44-41 double overtime win at Randolph Southern last week.

The Lady Rebels led easily through the first half, 17-4 first quarter score and 28-12 at halftime.

“We turned the ball over too much in the first half,” Gray said. “We finally got started in the second half.”

A refreshed Lady Patriots came back after halftime. Southern was limited to one point (one-of-two free throws) in the third period that cut the 16-point (28-12) halftime lead down to nine (29-20) at the end of the third period.

The Lady Patriots stayed strong in the fourth quarter with a 15-6 run filled with Maddie McClure, Ally Gray and Katie McCashland field goals. With Faith Richardson taking care of scoring, rebounding and keeping Southern’s big girl in check in the lane and Katie McCashland’s 3-pointer, the game ended in a 35-35 tie at the end of regulation time.

The first overtime was a wash with both teams scoring 2-for-2 from the free throw line and a 37-37 tie in overtime.

Both teams missed their opening shots in the second overtime and RS sent Richardson to the free throw line. The UC senior made two free throws before RS Brianna Smith’s corner shot tied the score at 39-39.

Then with a little more than two minutes remaining, UC junior Carly McCashland hit a three-pointer to put UC up, 42-39.

Southern’s 5’11” Courtney Clear hit a field goal to narrow the score, 42-41. RS failed to capitalize on a one-and-one at the free throw line, but UC’s Katie McCashland did not. The UC freshman made one-of-two freebies to bump the score up to 43-41 and 18 seconds still on the clock. McCashland was fouled again and made one-of-two from the free throw line that seal UC’s double overtime win at 44-41.
