The Union County boys basketball team suffered another cancellation last Friday when the game with Shenandoah game was cancelled mid-afternoon.

But before one game was marked off the calendar, athletic director Ryan Overholt had another one scheduled. Overholt sent e-mails announcing that the boys basketball team would play Speedway at noon the following day (Saturday).

Speedway? They are the Speedway Sparkplugs with a lot of spark.
Speedway’s speed and action won the JV game, 41-25, and the varsity game, 53-25.

“We were not ready to play when we got on the court,” UC coach Alex McCool said. “Defensively, we talked about identifying where their shooters are – we fell asleep.”

The Sparkplugs made 11 field goals and a free throw before the Patriots scored. UC was scoreless in the first quarter (17-0) and another three minutes into the second quarter. The halftime score was 37-7.

“We didn’t get a lot of shots tonight - they are so quick,” McCool said. “Our offense looked a little better in the second half. We moved the ball a little better, quicker.”

A pair of Sparkplugs finished in double figures – junior Nate Matelic had 13 points and senior Reis Walker had 12 points and four rebounds. Speedway out-rebounded the Patriots, 27-21.

Union County scoring leaders were Keaghan Coyle’s five points and Ragen Bias and Ty Elleman both with four points.

“We still got to do a better job overall to be ready for Rushville,” McCool said.
