Union County handed Knightstown a 47-27 Tri-Eastern Conference setback last week at Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium. The Lady Panthers fell to 2-19 on the season and 0-3 in the TEC. Union County stands 8-7 overall and a 2-4 TEC mark.

The first quarter ended with UC leading, 11-7, but settled for a 14-14 tie score at halftime.

“It was a very uninspired first half. Not real pleased with how we played,” UC coach Scott Gray said.

The discussion in the UC locker room at halftime brought a different Lady Patriot team to the floor for the second half.

Katie McCashland dropped in a 3-point shot to start UC’s 16-6 third quarter run and three more Lady Pats (Carly McCashland, Brooke Fields, Lauren Alldredge) jumped on board the score column. With UC’s offense heating up, so too did the Lady Pat defense. Union County out-rebounded Knightstown 7-5 and allowed just two field goals and a pair of freebies on the way to a 30-20 third quarter lead.

“I think Brooke Fields really spearheaded and set the second half for us in how well she played,” Gray said. “Defensively she was fantastic and got us to do what we wanted to do.”

The Lady Pats stayed the course in the third period with 17 points scored and defense that limited the Lady Panthers to seven points.

Fields, Faith Richardson and Ally Gray led Union County with eight points each. Richardson and Gray led UC in rebounds. Richardson had five and Gray four.

Taylor Reagan and Destiny McGlothin paced Knightstown with nine and eight points, respectively.

“We’re happy with the 20 point third quarter lead,” Gray said. “And pleased with the win overall.”
