A pair of light-weight sophomores led Union County’s wrestling team of seven to fifth-place in the 2022 Tri-Eastern Conference meet at Union City last Saturday.

Carson Whitley and Jesus Aquino-Morales are TEC Champions.

Whitley was the No. 1 seed going in, took the undefeated route through the 113-pound bracket to stand at the top of the podium as champion. Whitley won a 13-10 decision over Centerville’s Bryson Hale in the title match.

Morales was the No. 1 seed at 120 pounds and followed Whitley’s footsteps - no losses - and No. 1 on the podium at award time. Morales pinned Union City’s Conner Cline to win the title.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class are awarded ribbons at the podium awards program.

Junior Jordan Takara and senior Nathan Reffitt are TEC Runners-up.
Takara won two matches by pin to reach the final round of the 152-pound weight class where he finished as runner-up to Centerville’s Luke Cannarella.
Reffitt won his first match by forfeit before finishing as runner-up to Centerville’s Sebastian Collins.

Junior Evan Wolf earned third-place, freshmen Tanner Burns finished fourth, and Cal Rudnick was fifth.

Wolf (145) won his first two matches by forfeit, lost a match and won another match by forfeit. Then in the match for third place, Wolf pinned Northeastern’s Thane Berger in the first round pin to put him on the podium at the awards presentation.

Burns lost in the opening round of the 126 pound weight class, won a match by forfeit and a 14-0 major decision to reach the final round and place him fourth in the class.

Rudnick, UC’s 106 pounder, won his first match by forfeit, lost the next match, then pinned his opponent in the match for fifth-place. The fifth-placer earned points toward the team score.

Centerville’s 274 points easily won the 2022 TEC team title. Nine Bulldog wrestlers reached the championship match and 8 earned champion status. Winchester was a distant second with 157 points.

Northeastern placed third (149), Union City fourth (123), Union County fifth (112.5) in front of Lincoln (69), Hagerstown (64), Knightstown (50) and Tri High (46).
