Red Devils trip Wildcats in finale

With the tough Connersville Sectional just days away, the Franklin County Wildcats hosted Class 4A Richmond on Thursday night as FC's seniors looked to win their final game inside the Wildcat gymnasium.

That didn't come to pass, as the visiting Red Devils surged out of the halftime locker room to take a 13-point lead and held off a late Wildcat comeback attempt to win 52-47.

A banked three by forward JD Stokes, off a Brant Ertel assist, just beat the first-quarter buzzer and had the Wildcats ahead by one at 15-14 during the first stop. A pull-up jumper by senior Chad Cox and Ertel's steal and conversion put FC up 19-17 midway through the second period.

Richmond, though, would score the next 15 points as coach Mark Foster needed a timeout at 32-19 and nearly four minutes gone in the second half.
Freshman Mason Carpenter started the run with a corner 3-pointer and Red Devil big man Stephan Douglas stepped out for a triple with 2:09 remaining in the half. The score of 23-19 held up as the total at intermission.

Richmond's good shooting fortunes continued well into the next stanza. Gunner Kovach opened the new half with a trey and later sank one of two at the charity stripe after a borderline foul called on Stokes. After an FC 30-second timeout, the Devils extended their lead with a 17-footer from Carpenter and another Kovach 3-pointer.

Following another huddle, the Cats put together a 7-0 swing behind five points from Ertel and two for Cox. With 1:15 to go in the third, Deante Smith was fouled by Stokes on a made jump shot and hit the foul toss to make it 35-26 with nine minutes left.

Stokes fouled out at the game's 5:53 mark and RHS led 36-27 after the ensuing free throw. Seconds later, Douglas took an outlet pass all the way home for the 11-point lead.

With five minutes still left to work, the home team started climbing back in. Junior Jace Lee scored off an Ertel drive and dish, and after a layup for Kovach, Cox nailed a 3-point shot. A feed to Douglas had Richmond back up by nine with 2:34 remaining. Cox was fouled on a three attempt and converted two freebies to make it 42-35. At 1:45, Ertel brought FC within 43-37 with two FTs.

The Red Devils hit the double bonus but made just one of their next four at the foul line. Ertel hit from the elbow to make it 44-39. At the one-minute mark, Cox halved the Devil lead to three with a triple. Cox would again go to the line for three shots, repeating the 2-of-3 effort. With 28.3 seconds left, Ertel drilled one in the lane and Foster used a final timeout. At 49-46, three more free ones for RHS were enough to close it out.

Carpenter opened the night's scoring with a 3-pointer and Douglas banked in a short shot for a 5-0 Richmond lead. It was soon tied at 5 after a Stokes lay-in and Ertel three from the side. Senior Austin Hill had an and-one opportunity to give FC its first lead. Douglas tied things at 7 before Cox switched hands in the paint to land two. Stokes found Ertel for a three, giving the Cats their largest advantage at five.

Richmond scored seven unanswered with baskets by Chase Newton, Carpenter and Douglas.

Ertel was high-point man in the contest with 20 tallies and Cox added a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Douglas (17), Carpenter (13) and Kovach (10) paced the guests.

The Wildcats enter tournament play on a bit of a downturn, having lost three of their last four games. FC hopes to win its first sectional game in four years tonight, facing Batesville at approximately 7:30 p.m. The Cats defeated the Bulldogs by 17 in January.

Scoring
R (10-14) – Carpenter 13 (2 3s), Smith 3, Kovach 10 (2 3s), Newton 8 (2 3s), Ryder Cate 1, Douglas 17 (3)
FC (16-5) – Lee 2, Hill 2, Stokes 5 (3), Ertel 20 (3 3s), Cox 17 (2 3s), Eli Butt 1
