Back for his fifth season as skipper is Alex McCool. McCool is 51-38 as head coach for the Cats. Last year's 17-win squad will return almost fully intact, including senior pitcher Michaela Ferman. Ferman was the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference (EIAC) leader in strikeouts during her junior campaign with 181, also picking up 11 wins while holding opposing batters to just a .242 average. Ferman has 302 K's for her career in just 230 innings pitched.
The Lady Cats will be returning a majority of their lineup from last season. Josie Rolfes will return for her junior campaign to man first base again for Franklin County. Rolfes was third on the team in hits last season with 36 and led the Lady Cats in runs scored with 33. Rounding out the infield are returners Kiersten Schell at second, Maci Lake at shortstop, and Kensee Ferman at the hot corner. Schell hit .377 in 81 plate appearances a season ago. Lake's defense at the stopgap will be counted on in her junior season.
Behind the plate will be returnee Anna Becker. Becker was one the more reliable catchers in the EIAC a year ago. In 31 games for the Lady Cats, Becker finished the season with just one error. Two-thirds of the outfield will be manned by returnees Kassidy Schell and Bree Bischoff. Becker and Bischoff tied last year to lead the Lady Cats in hits with 37 each.
After losing just two contributors to last year's squad, and returning all three EIAC selections (M. Ferman, Kas. Schell, and Rolfes) McCool should have his team competing for an EIAC championship later this spring. Last season the Lady Cats finished 8-6 in conference play, good for fourth. East Central, Connersville and Greensburg finished ahead of FC last season.
The Lady Cats will begin the 2022 season next Wednesday when they travel to Cambridge City. They will then take on two more Tri-Eastern Conference opponents when they host Hagerstown and then travel to Centerville. Franklin County's first EIAC game will be on April 11, when they face Lawrenceburg. The Lady Cats defeated the Lady Tigers in all three contests a season ago.
In the Lady Cats' scrimmage this past Thursday with Milan, Ferman made her presence felt on the mound, retiring five of the first six batters she faced via strikeout. FC showed good patience in the batter's box, drawing walks and waiting on hittable pitches. The Lady Cats batted around the lineup in the controlled scrimmage, plating several runs and giving fans a glimpse of what will be in store this season on the diamond in Franklin County.
