CONNERSVILLE – Thanks to some clutch playing by senior No. 1 singles player Kacie Williams, the Franklin County girls tennis team made it 2-for-2 in sectional championships under coach Katrina Huerkamp.

Friday at Connersville High School, the Lady Wildcats successfully defended their 2021 title as Williams closed out a 7-5, 7-6 (7-0) victory over Rushville's Audrey Gulley to give FC the narrow 3-2 win.

The stage was set for the No. 1 showdown after the Lady Lions' Jin Calaf knocked off Lola Mann 6-0, 6-2 at third singles and Olivia Yager got by FC's Nicole Mears on the adjoining court, 6-0, 6-1. The Wildcats were superior in doubles action as Grace Roth and Kaylin Knapp won 6-4, 6-2 over Isabella Wilson and Cora Emory at No. 1 and Chloe Cowen and Regan Barker triumphed 6-3, 6-0 past Mallory McDaniel and Brooklyn Newbold.

FC faced off with the host Lady Spartans Thursday after play was canceled the previous night due to rain.

Thursday's matches weren't all completed as storms popped up, but FC had a comfortable lead over CHS, and Rushville had little problem with Union County. The Wildcats eventually scored a 4-1 victory with Knapp and Roth concluding their win to start Friday's slate.

FC faced New Castle at the Richmond Regional Tuesday (results not available at press time). A win would set up a regional final today against either Oldenburg Academy or Centerville.
