Lady Pats close softball season with 11-5 win at New Castle

Union County’s 11-5 win at New Castle was the final game of the regular season and a good warm-up for sectional.

Senior pitcher Chloe Greene and company scored two runs in the second inning and exploded in the sixth with eight runs and added one more in the seventh. Eleven runs on 14 hits and zero errors.

Greene gave up two hits while fanning 9 and issued one walk.  

Hitters of the day were Sophia Knock (3-of-4) and Brooke Fields (3-of-4). Faith Richardson had one hit but it was a big one - a 3-run home run. 

The Lady Trojans  jumped out to an early 5-2 lead after the second inning, but were held scoreless during the remaining five innings.

Lady Pats wrap up season, 24-2, with 10-0 rout at Milan

Swinging Union County bats and Bailey Mathews throwing on the mound gave the Lady Patriots a 10-0 shutout in 6 innings last week  at Milan.

Mathews gave up one hit, struck out 12 and walked zero. Milan pitchers gave up 10 runs on six hits, 4 strike- outs and seven walks.

Union County scored a run in the first inning, added three in the third, two in the fourth and topped it off with four runs in the sixth inning.

Catcher Shelby Hill led the Lady Patriots with 3-of-3 at the plate to go with a dozen putouts.

The Lady Patriots improved to 24-2. Milan fell to 4-13.

The IHSAA Girls Softball Sectional #41 at Union County began Monday, May 23, with Union County taking on the  Shenandoah Lady Raiders.

•Northeastern vs Centerville, Tuesday, May 24, 5 p.m.

•Hagerstown vs Game 1 winner, Tuesday, May 24, 7 p.m.

•Championship–Game 2 winner vs Game 3 winner, Wednesday, May 25, 6 p.m.

Lady Patriots defeat Shenandoah 11-3 to advance at sectional

Union County hit the Shenandoah Lady Raiders with an 11-3 loss in the first game of the IHSAA Class 2A Softball Sectional at Union County. The first game win moved the Lady Patriots on to play Hagerstown in the semi-finals. The championship game followed on Wednesday, May 25.  

“Offensively we are where we want to be,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “Pitching was obviously good. Chloe Greene was spot-on tonight.”

Greene finished with 11 strikeouts and one walk.

“We’re starting to hit the ball at the right time especially over the last 3 weeks,” Gray said. “We put baserunners on so they can knock in runs and we’re running bases pretty effectively.” 

Union County got off to a good start with two runs in the first inning, three runs in the third and Annalea Adams’ home run in the fourth inning. 

The Lady Patriots put the game out of reach in the sixth inning with Sophia Knock hitting over the fence for the fifth run and  11-3 win. 

“Defensively we were a little sloppy tonight but I think that will improve as we go,” Gray said. “We just take one game at a time and we have to play good from here on out.”

Behind Knock’s 5 RBI (HR) and 2 each from Hill and Harly Pilgrim, UC defeated Hagerstown 9-1 Tuesday to reach the finals. Greene fanned 12 fro the win.
